Barnett,

How does a teacher use a VAN result that could be entirely inaccurate due to measurement error? And, if a teacher eval plan is written in a way that forces a district to lay off the lowest scoring teachers in a plan that includes teacher self-assessments, observation results, and VAM scores, the VAm scores will serve as the critical factor regardless of weighting since there is far less variation in self-assessments and observations than VAM scores. The piece with the greatest variation will determine who gets fired. Teachers supporting the use of VAM should be acutely aware of the possibility that they could be supporting a system that could fire teachers based on a statistical error.
