Barnett,
thank-you for sharing these very serious concerns with us. As a 30-year veteran who has worked with kids "with serious and diverse learning challenges," I am appalled that NCTQ would even consider having future educators work with kids without any extensice training. It is also very frightening that they propose that is fine. I have seen firsthand the importance of studying the various teaching strategies, seriousness of the CORE process as well as student teaching specifically with kids who "learn differently" prior to having a classroom of my own. As a mentor specifically assigned to new special education teachers, I know how tricky and challenging the first five years can be working with such a seriously needy group of students, no matter the age or disability. I have taught kindergardeners with hearing impairments all the way through post high school deaf and blind young men and women, and would have never stayed in this amazing and rewarding profession if it were not for my extenive training. Thank-you for sharing this blog and your concerns, which I know will be echoed throughout the nation by fellow educators who are worried about the future.
